Conquering Doubt in the Desert: How Jesus Shows Us to Trust God in Every Season

Have you ever felt abandoned or forsaken by God? Like He wasn't there when you needed Him most? I think we've all been there at some point. Life gets hard, and it's tempting to try to handle problems on our own instead of trusting God.

I recently read Matthew 4:1-11 where Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After fasting for 40 days, Jesus was understandably hungry. The devil seized on this moment of physical weakness to tempt Jesus, saying, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread" (v.3).

The devil was trying to get Jesus to doubt His identity as the Son of God that had just been confirmed at His baptism. "If you are the Son of God, prove it by using your power to satisfy your hunger," he essentially said. The devil wanted Jesus to act independently of the Father and meet His needs in His way.

But Jesus responds by quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, saying, "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God." As the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years, God humbled them through hunger before providing manna from heaven. Through this, God taught the Israelites that He was their provider and they needed to depend on Him and His Word for life.

Jesus overcame the devil's temptation to distrust God's care by remembering how God had faithfully provided for His people in the past. Even in His weakest state, Jesus trusted the Father and refused to give in to the temptation to take matters into His own hands.

I love how this passage reminds us that God is dependable, no matter what we face. When we are depleted physically, emotionally, and spiritually, God remains faithful as our provider.

Maybe you feel like you are in desert season right now. Health problems, financial struggles, loneliness, grief, or other challenges have left you feeling empty and abandoned. The enemy is whispering lies that God has forgotten you or doesn't care. Don't listen! God promises, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you" (Hebrews 13:5). He who led the Israelites through the wilderness will guide you through your desert.

Or perhaps the temptation you face is trusting in your abilities rather than relying on God. You figure with enough effort, intellect, or talent, you can handle life. Why waste time praying or reading Scripture when you can make things happen your way? But Jesus shows us that real life and contentment are found in God's presence and provision, not self-sufficiency.

Next time you're faced with temptation, follow Jesus' example. Combat the devil's lies with God's eternal truth. Quote Scripture, pray, and recall specific times when God has shown His faithfulness to you in the past. Stand firm in the belief that the same God who has been your help before can sustain you now. You can entirely rely on His unchanging character.

No matter what challenges come our way, we never have to face them alone. In our weakest moments, God promises to be our strength. His provision may not look like we expect or come as quickly as we hope. But when we trust Him fully and turn to His Word, we find the power to overcome. We really can depend on a dependable God!
